A black, purple, or brownish discoloration under or involving a toenail is frequently due to trauma to the toe nail, such as when something is dropped on the toe. The color results from a blood clot or bleeding under the nail, and may involve the entire nail or just a small portion of it. This can be very painful when the entire nail is involved, and may need medical attention to relieve the pressure caused by bleeding under the toenail. Although it is very rare, a more serious cause of black toenails is malignant melanoma. Since early diagnosis and treatment of melanoma improves the chances for a good outcome, it is important that all black toenails be evaluated by a qualified foot and ankle surgeon to rule out this cause. Other rare causes of black toenails include fungal infections, chronic ingrown nails, or health problems affecting the rest of the body.   « less
  2. I have been running for about 6months now. I run about 35 miles a week on average. I have been wearing the same brand and fit of running shoe for these months - switching them as the heel wears. I bought a new pair with an arch lock and developed a blister on one foot and after 3 runs with these shoes - the top of my foot - top of the tendon that goes into the arch is extremely sore to the touch. I can't even wear a shoe on it without experiencing the pain. It shoots down into my toes and goes numb at times but the pain is unbearable. I have not worn these running shoes since and have been fitted for new running shoes. What could be the problem? Could I have done major damage to my foot? I miss running and want to get back to it. I do not experience the pain walking unless I have any shoe on that foot. - Annette from Shelbyville, TN

  7. I have a burning almost like a spur sensation on the left side of my ankle on my right foot. When I try to stand the bottom of my arch near the heel hurts and makes it hard to walk or stand for several minutes. The bone along that side becomes very hard as opposed to my left foot in the same area. Sometimes this may bother me for 1 to 3 days and then not for several days but it keeps coming back. I must tell you have within the last year I have had 2 total knee replacement surgeries. My left knee was done 9/12/06 and my right knee was done 11/28/06. Do you have any idea what my be causing my foot pain? Also, about 4 years ago I had a nerve removed from that same foot (right foot) and was told that I had another nerve that should possibly be removed. However, I don't think the pain I am experiencing stems from that nerve. Hoping to receive a response. Thank you. - Sheila from Mustang, Oklahoma
