  1. Two years after Lasik surgery can I use regular eye drops like Visine for dry and itchy allergy eyes? - Susan from Clinton Twp. MI
Yes. You can. thanks, Colby Stewart, MD, FACS

  2. I had original lasik 1999. Enhancement on right eye 2003. Laser was off center and had no vision in that eye from that time on. Went to other dr. and had several more surgeries. Detached retina in left eye. Was very nearsighte before orig. surgery. Had to have holes lasered prior to first surgery in left eye (lattice degeneration.) Lasik was done 6-wks later in that eye. I have two eyes that don't seem to go together. I can only see good outside especially if sunny day. Mornings and dreary, rainy days I plan on not seeing hardly anything. I have tried readers, but not much help. I also had a cataract removed in left eye which only made it worse. Glasses that have been made for me don't help. I do know the original flaps were cut too small which immediately gave me halos and glares at night. I battle every day to see. Am female, 55 years of age. Is there anything that can be done for me or will I have to remain this way the rest of my life. - Nancy from Waverly, Ohio
Don't know. Would like to see you in the office to do a complete exam. We would have an answer then. thanks, Colby Stewart, MD

  3. I have been told that I have some what of a lazy right eye. My vision has decreased in it considerably the last couple years. Is there anything that can be done to correct it. If it is lazy I myself or no one else notices it. It's just blurry at far distances when I cover the good eye. I need my vision as my employer says we have to maintain 20/40 vision in both eyes. Last time checked I was 20/50 on the right. What do I do. - bush from Chattanooga tn

I think I understand your question. If you are nearsighted then you can usually see up close when you take your glasses off; but you will need the glasses to see clearly in the distance. If you are over 40; you will start to need bifocals, or reading glasses; or if your near sighted, you can take your glasses off. LASIK can fix the distance vision; but cannot fix the normal aging process of the eyes; thus you will continue to need some form of reading glasses (assuming you are over 40 - if your not over 40- you will be able to see in the distance and up close after LASIK). Hope this helps   « less
  5. Doctor: Approximately 10 yrs ago I had RK surgery. I had worn hard contacts d/t astigmatism and near sightedness (glasses since 1956) since 1963 with no problems. I cannot recall specifically but I had to have 3 visits on my right eye and 2 on the left before my vision was fairly decent. I believe the difficulty in correction was because this dr did the surgery before my eyes had relaxed. I was without contacts only 90 days, wore soft lenses during that time. I have been pleased with not having to wear glasses for distance and do use otc readers. Mornings have always been worse for me for acuity and in the past 3 years or so, I find I can no longer read highway signs unless I'm up on them. Night driving is the pits. It is as if my astigmatism has returned. I also now find that I need glasses to be able to read the computer screen or paperwork for my job. I use 2.75 to 3.0 diopters for readers and the readers are not doing the trick. I have to get right up on the screen or documents. Could you give me some suggestions on any options I have for correction? My local optometrist says there is nothing to be done other than order 2-3 sets of glasses but since my vision changes in both eyes at different times that's not an option for me. Thank you. Sheri Kelly - Sheri Kelly from Sweetwater, Tennessee

Sheri; I can do LASIK surgery on top of past RK surgery. You have a lot of issues here, and I think you should come in for a complete FREE exam and consultation with me and my staff. Many things could be going on; but if it can be corrected with glasses or contacts, most likely it can be corrected with LASIK. The fact you had RK makes things slightly less predictable as far as the postoperative results; but reading your post, sounds like you might be getting farsighted; and that is why the strength of your reading glasses keeps going up. We can fix this. Come in and see us. Hope this helps 866-394-2020   « less
  6. I would like to get lasik surgery but I have been told that my vision is that bad. I wear +100 in my left eye and -50 in my right. this works well for me but now I have wear readers till I but my contact in. I have also had to give up a lot of distance to be able to read too. Thank you Marie Lovell - Marie from Knoxville, TN

Thanks Marie, If you are over 40 years old this is something that happens. You will need readers. Your refraction is not that bad; you are right; and your contact is probably set up for 'monovision' whichmakes it possible to see up close; but yes, this does take away from your distance vision. Call my office for other options. Thanks, C Stewart, MD FACS   « less
  7. Hi, I recently had cataract surgery on both eyes and lens replacement. Now I have so many floaters I can't see to drive. I'm young, 60, and don't want to give up my independence. Will these go away? I'm worried sick. - Bess from Dandridge,tn.

Floaters are very, very common. There is no treatment for floaters unfortunately. They usually go away with time. Some patients see floaters after cataract surgery, more than they did before surgery. Floaters are benign, but a sudden onset of floaters should be looked at to rule out a more serious condition called a retinal detachment. We would be happy to see you in the TLA office for a full dilated exam: 866-394-2020   « less
  8. I have had lasik surgery which was great (you did it) but now that I am getting older, I have to use reading glasses. Do you think there will be any surgery coming out that will take care of this problem? - Brenda from Cookeville, TN

Well, that is a great question. The reality is that LASIK or any refractive procedure is primary directed toward correcting your vision for the distance. The needing reading glasses is a part of getting older, and it is called presbyopia. You could have something called mono-vision, where you have one eye set for distance and one eye set for near. It sounds crazy, but it works on most people that are over 40. I would try it with a contact first to make sure you liked it; then it could be done with LASIK to reverse what you had and make the one eye nearsighed again. Hope this helps. 9. I had Lasik eye surgery about 6 years ago. I had 20/20 vision until the last few months and now need glasses. It was my understanding that the Lasik surgery was a final fix except for needing reading glasses as I got older. Is Lasik suppose to be a final fix? Thanks - Samantha from Knoxville, TN

Usually it is permanent. But sometimes peoples eyes continue to change after LASIK and they might need an enhancement surgery. You cant get out of readers if your over 40. Some times the lens in your eye is changing; ie; early cataract and that can change your prescription and cause you to need glasses again. This can be fixed with cataract surgery if the vision is bad enough. Hope this helps, WCS MD   « less
  10. Considering Lasix (60 y.o.f.) apparently have an "early cataract" right eye and told by local Optometrist "can't have lasix) Why? This is my third time asking your column with no results. - Elaine Masingo from New Tazewell, Tn.

Sorry for the delay. If you have a cataract, then it probably is what is causing you to see poorly. The best way to explain this is to find out what you see with your best corrected vision. If it is 20/20 then LASIK will work. If you are 20/50 with your best correction, then it is probably because your cataract is creating the problem. In this case, cataract surgery is what you need; and that would be covered under your insurance. The nice thing about cataract surgery is that you can become less dependent on your glasses because of the implant in your eye after cataract surgery. If you have an early cataract you can still have lasik; but it depends on what your vision is when it is best corrected. Hope this helps. WCS MD   « less
