- Hello, My leather sofa is coming apart in several places at the seams, or more specifically, the seams at the back on the top where the cushions are attached. How do I get this repaired? thanks, Lori

You'll always learn more in the buying experience when you have a problem with something, and next time you will know what to look for. Proper seam strength in the stitching is not one of the most talked about features when purchasing a leather sofa, but is very important, especially with attached backs. Depending on how long you've had this sofa, most factories will warrant this for 2 years, However this problem is fixable, but you have to take off the inside back panel and restitch from the inside with the proper strength nylon, depending on the thickness of your leather. I would use a professional reupholster for repair. We have used "diversified upholstery" and "expert leather repair" in the past for leather repair, but call around and get pricing, they're some companies in town that seem to be a rip off. « less
- Hi - our leather furniture has been with us for about 6 yrs and is clearly in need of some minor repair (deep cleaning, etc) the leather is a light color also. We were thinking that just getting our leather furniture "covered" would be a cheaper alternative to buying a brand new set. Do you know how we could investigate a company who may do such work? We live in Winston Salem, NC. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Brian.

Factoring in the labor and the Materials cost your sofa would probaly cost twice what you paid for it to be recovered in leather. If you just need minor repair and cleaning I would a leather restoration specialist in Winston Salem. I really don't know who to recommend, but their are alot of listings in your market. Call some of the furniture stores and ask them who they use to repair leather and this might guide you to the most reputable sevice. « less
- my wife and I made a mistake when buying furniture; we bought pieces too large for our house. Now i have an large mahogany dresser, a huge solid oak dresser, a futon, and three full size beds (two brass, one solid cherry) for sale. Most of the pieces are estate quality pieces. My question is this -- where would you recommend that we could sell these pieces? We need to start over with smaller scale pieces (probably from brown squirrel!)

It takes a little more work, but you would probably get the most money for your furniture. Their are other internet sites like furnituretrader.com you can try as well. Option 2 would be the classifieds in the News Sentinel, which could create alot of phone calls and people wanting to barter. Optional 3 would be a local used furniture store, which would probably offer you the least amount. Generally you asking price should be unfortunately about 1/3 of you purchase price if their in good condition. And option 4, you can donate to a charity and get a tax deduction . option would be to list your items in the News Sentinel classifieds. « less
- On 4/11/07 you responded to an e-mail I sent you concerning my couch. (orginally e-mail is below ). I just wanted you to know that before seeing your response I contacted Stevens furniture and LANE. I kept insisting my couch was defected. They both refused to give me a new couch even though Stevens furniture saw the damage. It was because of my continued complaints LANE sent a furniture repairman to my home to inspect my sofa. He agreed with you and said it was defected because of the design. If he was to repair it ,the same thing would happen . I am now waiting to see what LANE is going to do. I want a leather sofa in a differnt design or my money back. Orginal e-mail WE purchased a lane leather couch with two recliners in it. Two months after we had the couch we noticed that there was hardly any cushion on the arm rest and you felt the wood. It was under warranty and repaired. Now on the side of the arm you can feel the wood coming through and there is acutally a line you see. We checked the other side and the same thing is hjappening but not has bad. Our couch is 11 months old and my husband and myself are the only ones to use it. LANE told me that they are going to repair it but the dye lot will be differnt. I want a new couch because I think my couch is defected. Did you ever see this happening before. Thank-You -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 04-11-2007 - Ann, I have seen this before and it's not easy to fix because of the leather. Before the fabric goes on, the frame should be padded so that the fabric/leather never touches the bare wood. This will prevent fabric wear and also add subtle softness to the piece. Cotton and polydacron are the most popular frame padding materials. All reclining manufactures use different grades of conjugate fiber and/or foam in their padded arms. Its seems to me that your arm rest is wrapped with dacron fiber without any premium foam buffering the frame edges from your fabric. Unless they change the way your arm rest is constructed, you will have the same problem again. Lane's warranty states that foam cushions are warranted for five years, it would be reasonable to assume this would cover cushioning in the arm rest as well. Their warranty also states they pay for the labor within one year, which is about to expire. Personally I think if you already have had one repair and the same problem still exist, you should be eligible for a new sofa. If you bought this from a respectable retailer, they should back you with this problem. Thank-You for your help. This whole incident is very upsetting because we saved and saved to buy a leather couch.

"Stevens furniture" website states they have been in business for 38 years. You can't be in business this long if you don't take care of you customers. If a factory authorized repair person acknowleged you have a defective design within the warranty period, their is no reason the retailer wouldn't help you out of this situation, the factory should refund or take back the defective leather sofa and allow you to reselect for a new one. It shouldn't be a problem for "Stevens" because they can get full credit back from the factory. I would find out who the "Lane" sales representative is for that market, he is the one who can make the decison about your furniture. If that doesn't work, contact "Furniture brands international" corporate headquarters, They are the parent company of Lane. If this problem is as bad as discribed, it might take a little more work, but they should understand your problem and the amount of hard earned money you've spent on their product. Usually these big publically traded companies will take care of their customers, they don't like bad press. « less
- We are considering the purchase of a Lane sofa and loveseat in microfiber. We don't know much about Lane or microfiber. I've found quite a bit of positive comments about Microfiber but haven't been able to find much to reassure me that Lane would be a company that provides a quality product. The larger sofa would run $600 on sale but Manufacturer's Retail Price is about $1,000. That doesn't seem like much to pay and I'm a bit nervous about the quality. Could you give me any information or thoughts you might have on Lane. Thank you. Nancy

Just like any furniture company, they have different levels of quality. They seem to have a good warranty on their product and put it in writing. The retail price is bogus, but a Lane Sofa for $600 in a quality microfiber seems to be a good buy. No manufacture is problem free, it really depends on who you buy it from and how they handle their customers should a problem exist. One way you can usually find out if the sofa has a quailty frame is to check and see if the legs are built into the frame, not screw on legs. Also ask the salesperson about the density of the fire retardent foam in the seat cushion(should be 2.0 or better). When sitting in the sofa, make sure each cushion sit even from one end to the other.( No sagging in the ends. Hopefully this will help you make you decision « less
- We have leather/fabric combination couch. The leather is on the back and sides, the cushions are fabric. On the top part of the leather portion the leather buckles (maybe gathers is a better word). Is this normal? Thanks for your help.

- I am looking for new furniture for my living room. I have 4 indoor cats.....eek. I want a fabric that will hold up to "launching" and is easy to clean off hair. I have looked at microfiber, but the problem is that it is not breathable. It is just too hot. I have looked at leather, but it will not stand up to the claws of my jumping cats. Any ideas for a fabric that will hold up to my pets and will still be comfortable to sit or lay on? Thank you for your help!

Its a especially engineered fabric with an integrated moisture barrier that promises permanent performance. No stains, No spills with a five year warranty against stains, spills, moisture, bacteria, and odor's. I personally inspected samples of this fabric in the spring furniture market and was amazed. It feels as great as it looks, comes in many different textures: Suedes, Prints, Twills, Chenille's and even velvets. It's so new it hasn't hit mainstream yet. It seemed a little expensive, but so was microfiber when it first came out, now you can find it everywhere. I know Crate and Barrel sells it, and I believe Flexsteel as well. To find out more about this fabric go to cryptonfabric.com. « less
- We have a black leather couch that is fairly new but unfortunately it has taken on the smell of body odor and/or perfume and I was wondering what would be the best way to clean it. It does not have visible stains. I just want to find out how to "de-odorize" it. Thank you.

I would look at a full grain aniline leather with protection. Full grain leather is the most genuine type of leather, as it retains all the original texture and markings of the original hide. Most of the Full grains are processed in Italy. The two most popular leather companies in Italy are "Natuzzi"(which is a little pricey) but great craftsmenship and "Softline" which in my opinion for the price range your looking for is you best best. If you would like to see softline, we carry this brand at "Brown Squirrel" and Natuzzi is at "Bradens". In Italy Leather is their heritage and they take pride in their craftsmanship just like their leather shoes and pocketbooks. It is very important to ask the sells person what type of leather you are looking at. Basically you have Four types: (1). Full grain, (2)semi aniline or protected leather (Which is also a good choice), this is a anilined dyed leather which has been corrected and has more consistent color, (3)Pigmented or painted leather (Stay away from). Alot of companies use this process to save cost and is less durable. (4)Nubuck, which is a suede type natural leather but isn't resistent to stains. Their are alot of leather companies but only a few have really great leathers. Their are also some brands you probably haven't heard of that also have great leather and features. LG-interiors is a company we also carry which uses Italian leathers, with 8-way hand tied coil spring foundation, coil spring seats, down in the seats and backs. The best advice I can tell you is to shop several dealers with good leather selections and ask questions about the hand of leather and construction of the frame. Does it sit comfortable? Is the leather Soft? Generally the softer the leather, the better the grade. « less
- Preston: I see a number of questions below about good uphostery options for pets. I'm not so concerned about stains/odors, but am instead looking for some good advice on options that will withstand a cat with claws (who likes to scratch). Lucky me, I inherited a cat when I married my husband. While I'd rather not have any pets in the house, she’s an indoor cat with claws and even I’m not cruel enough to de-claw a cat. Do have any first hand knowledge of wherther microfiber can actually withstand cat scratching? And, if not, any other good reccoemndations? Thanks for your time and willingness to share your good advice and tips. Carol

They tend to go for things that are wicker, rattan and stuff that really gives them a workout. Smooth fabrics work best. One of the best is velvet as well as microfiber. The Fabric should be as tight weave as possible so it won't snag as well as preventing hair getting caught in them. We've had lots of customers who have bought microfiber fabrics for a pet friendly environments and have been very satisfied. Another recommendation would be washable slipcovers which can be sized to your sofa or have a special animal blanket made for your sofa. « less
