- Do you know of any good, reputable businesses that can repair a leather couch? I have a leather couch that is ~4-5 years old. It started coming apart at the seams of the cushions within one year of purchase. (I won't mention any names but I will never buy anything from RTG again!) It like the set (I purchased the couch, loveseat, and two matching recliners) but that defect is an eyesore and embarrassment. Thanks!

- I am debating between the purchase of leather living room furniture of microfiber. Where would my money be best spent. I looked at a leather living room set which included the sofa, love-seat, 2 chairs and 1 ottman for 2,500. I stressed my family by going back and forth about what to purchase. I am on a budget but would prefer not to have to worry about furniture for awhile. Thanks for your time and expert feedback.

They're seems to be alot of deception between type's of leathers being sold in the market. The best leather on a sofa would be anilined dyed in the tanning process, not pigmented or basically a painted or topcoated finish on the surface. The best way to tell is to open the cushion casing if possible and look on the backing, if the coloring is the same color as the surface, its anilined dyed and has been tanned all the way through, If not and the backing is a white or gray color, its been topcoated or Pigmented and this colorwill rub off or fade eventually. If you have a family I would suggest an semi-anilined leather which is protected but also still shows the beauty of the natural grain. As far a microfiber it also depends on the manufacturer but currently is the best wearing synthetic fiber in the market. If you could e-mail me at pom@mindspring.com I will send you all the information you need to make the right decision. If possible please list the manufactures name and I can tell you the quality your looking at, and hopefully will make your decision hassle free and you will be able to enjoy your purchase for years to come. « less

It seems quality antique refinishing would bring you the most money. Also check out Chadimafurniture.com and review their policies and pricing, maybe this would be a helpful guideline. « less

Its easy to clean and disinfect with a mild detergent solution but won't stand up to sharp claws. Regardless of material, pattern is your true friend when you are considering pet friendly upholstery fabrics. Choose mid-tone colors wherever possible to minimze the impact of stains. If your worried about hair, select a fabric color that's as close to the shade of your dog's hair. Also consider Ultra suede or microfiber, a non-woven material that combines luxury with unprecedented performance. Ultra suede fabric is soft, supple and sensuous to the touch. Yet it's also resistant to stains and discoloration. It's even machine wash-able or dry cleanable, you can also use a lint brush for easy removal of animal hair and most stains. « less
- After reading some of your Q and A' s You sound like a man who knows what he is talking about. I discovered a slice in my 2 months new microfiber couch. It does not go all the way through the material but it is close. The retailer where I bought it from says there is no warranty because I bought it off the floor, (which I was NOT informed of). What can I do? The seams are also starting to split already. And I paid $700.00 for this?

If an item was bought on clearance or marked floor sample as-is usually the item carries no warranty and would be the customers responsibility for inspection should they decide to purchase. If this wasn't the case, the retailer should have the resources to repair the defects. Most manufactures warranty their fabrics for one year and will provide parts, cushions, etc at no charge unless the fabric was discontinued. If you could e-mail me at pom@mindspring.com with a picture, I could better analyze your problem and perhaps help you solve your problem. The rule of thumb in our business is a satisfied customer will tell approximately 10 people of their positive experience, an unhappy customer will tell over 30 or more about their negative experience. Word of mouth is the strongest tool for success of any business. I would suggest to call their customer service department and find out the manufacture and see if the fabric is still current. Or if you know the maufacture, e-mail me and I can find out the information you need to justify your $700 investment. « less
- WE purchased a lane leather couch with two recliners in it. Two months after we had the couch we noticed that there was hardly any cushion on the arm rest and you felt the wood. It was under warranty and repaired. Now on the side of the arm you can feel the wood coming through and there is acutally a line you see. We checked the other side and the same thing is hjappening but not has bad. Our couch is 11 months old and my husband and myself are the only ones to use it. LANE told me that they are going to repair it but the dye lot will be differnt. I want a new couch because I think my couch is defected. Did you ever see this happening before. Thank-You

Before the fabric goes on, the frame should be padded so that the fabric/leather never touches the bare wood. This will prevent fabric wear and also add subtle softness to the piece. Cotton and polydacron are the most popular frame padding materials. All reclining manufactures use different grades of conjugate fiber and/or foam in their padded arms. Its seems to me that your arm rest is wrapped with dacron fiber without any premium foam buffering the frame edges from your fabric. Unless they change the way your arm rest is constructed, you will have the same problem again. Lane's warranty states that foam cushions are warranted for five years, it would be reasonable to assume this would cover cushioning in the arm rest as well. Their warranty also states they pay for the labor within one year, which is about to expire. Personally I think if you already have had one repair and the same problem still exist, you should be eligible for a new sofa. If you bought this from a respectable retailer, they should back you with this problem. « less
