- Hi, my name is Kelly Brewer. I am 35 with one year old twins. I have noticed in the past few weeks that I have a painful lump in the right upper quadrant of my right breast. I have previously been told that I have fibercystic changes in my breast so I avoid caffeine. This pain however feels different than anything I've ever experienced. It will "throb" at times and other times it seems to radiate pain down my breast and over toward my armpit. I have scrubbed surgery for years specializing in plastics. I have seen my fair share of breast cancers and IBC. I have an appointment for a breast exam in the next few weeks but couldn't get in quicker. The breast has really been bothering me today and I'm wondering if I should make an appointment with someone else sooner or if this is something that a few weeks isn't going to change. Thank you so much for taking the time to look at this. - Kelly Brewer from Kingston, Tennessee
- i was wondering about a few health problems i have, and to see what ideas you guys had about them...My breast have been hurting a lot lately, and when it does hurt the areola(colored part on the breast surrounding the nipple) part becomes wrinkled, and i have to massage it and when i do massage it they unwrinkles and i usually find a little painful knot on the areola. It occurs in both breasts, but mainly my left breast. I have had breast pain before, it pops up every month (not around the time of my period). Also little white bumps have popped up on both of my nippples, about 4 on each nipple is that normal? My back hurts too, and i feel alittle pressure in my stomach, but i have pains in my stomach every so often anyways so im not really worried about that. Its not that im pregnant if thats what your thinking because of the whole breast tenderness and pressure in stomach, because im on Yaz birth control pills, and i have been taking them regularly, daily, for the past 4 or 5 months. I've also been having back aches for the past two months ( i have a lot of health problems) So if you have any ideas of whats wrong with me. - Tabitha from Odenton, MD

- My sister has had a breast reduction almost 2 years ago. Since then she has had infections set up about 3 times. This last time the Doctor suggested removal of the breast. I feel that she needs some special attention in this matter. I am tring to get information for her about going to have a second opinion. I am concerned that her choice in physicans of a local surgen is not adequate. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. I love my sister greatly and I am very worried about her. Her left breast is heavily scared. I also worry that the whole situation may be too much emotionaly for her to handle. The physical pain that she is going through is extreme as well as the mental stress. I need to know some of the best Breast Centers in East Tennessee and some of the best Physicans with the compassion that she deserves. She has been through so much.

Chronic infections of the breast are very difficult to treat and oftentimes return even after surgical excision. Smoking is a common culprit for recurrent infections, which many times occur along the margins of the areola. Yet, it can be treated. Breast removal would be extreme. Dr. Webber, our breast surgeon at the Knoxville Comprehensive Breast Center, is very compassionate; and has had experience and success with treating this problem for many years. I would recommend you and your sister talk with him. Sincerely, Dr. Kozlowski « less
- A good friend of mine is the daughter of a breast cancer survivor. Her mother developed breast cancer when she was in her 30's. My friend is now in her 30's and has never been screened. I have heard that you should start being screened before the age your mother developed cancer, in such a situation. I have encouraged my friend to go for such screening, but she has not, because her physician has never referred her. I guess I am wondering what the appropriate age for a screening would be for someone with a family history such as hers.

If a woman has a mother who developed premenopausal breast cancer, it is recommended that the daughter begin yearly screening 10 years earlier than when her mother was diagnosed. Although it may not be recommended by our primary care physicians, we, as individuals, must be proactive in our own care. In addition to mammography, breast MRI is highly recommended in women who are at high risk. At the Knoxville Comprehensive Breast Center we have the only dedicated breast MRI unit in Tennessee. - I am a 47 year old woman and I have noticed in the past 2 weeks that I have a skin irritation around my right nipple. It itches and oozes very slightly a clear fluid which crusts over. The nipple seems a little deeper in color than the other and has dry skin around it. What should I do? Does this sound serious? I have started to dab a little Lidex E cream onto it for the past two nights. I do have mild skin exema on my arm and leg. Of course I have researched the internet and found a disease called Paget's disease of the breast which freaks me out a little. Please advise!!

It is important, however, to have this checked out by a breast specialist as Paget's Disease would have to be considered as well. If you have not had a mammogram recently, this should also be done at the time of your evaluation. Sincerely, Dr. Kozlowski « less
- I had a lumpectomy 4 1/2 years ago with lymph nodes removed. More and more recently I have been experiencing pain under the arm where the nodes were removed. I do not detect any swelling but do have some fairly sharp pain. I have never "babied" my arm. I play golf twice a week and lead a fairly active life. I first noticed the pain after hanging some clothes on a high rod in my closet, which is something I do every week. Is this something I should be worried about? Should I make an appointment with my oncologist to discuss it? Thank you for your help.

It is a particular problem as women who are perimenopausal. It is due to hormonal fluctuations at that time in a woman’s life. Sometimes it can be postmenopausal when women are on estrogen replacement therapy due to excess estrogen. If a woman is premenopausal, it can also be due to hormonal irregularity. At any age, itching can be due to irritation to clothing or detergent. Rarely, it can be a sign of an underlying breast cancer. « less

The most common cause of the pain that you describe is related to the chest wall pain with radiation to the breast. The type of pain you have seems to be intractable and is most often seen in women who are heavy smokers due to lack of oxygenation of the tissues. If you do smoke heavily, the best way to decrease this pain is to stop smoking. Smoking increases the chances of getting lung cancer and also breast cancer. The knots that you describe sound like that they are benign and not related to cancer. Be sure to keep your follow-up appointment. « less
