Over-the-counter products are very limited as to their effectiveness. The products sold at these places often are more competitive price-wise than some of these over-the-counter products and much more effective. Also, many centers do have free consultation regarding this. We have centers both at St. Mary's North and Farragut along with the main St. Mary's hospital which can provide this service for you. « less

Some are inflammatory cysts which can resolve spontaneously. Others are epithelial inclusion cysts which usually will not resolve without removal. Some severe inflammatory cysts as in cystic acne will scar in of itself. Removal of lesions also has potential to scar the skin. With regards to prevention, there are many medicines that help to prevent the development of cysts. The most effective of these are all prescription. « less
- I have had NLD on both my lower legs for a few years, it has had it flare ups and then seems to subside to hardly being noticed. Recently it started spreading like a wild fire on my lower left leg and has nearly engulfed everything from knee to ankle on that leg, I also developed a nasty ulcerating sore which would not heal regardless of the treatments tried. The doctors have researched and come up with an intravenous treatment called Infliximab that case studies have proven effective in just a few treatments. What can you tell me about Infliximab in assoc. with NLD?

Smoking cessation and optimal diabetic control are very improvement in this disease. The next line of therapies are intralesional and topical steroids, after that systemic steroids, aspirin, Dipyridamole, Ticlopidine, Nicotinamide, Clofazimine, topical PUVA. Finally, third line therapies include many agents from Ciclosporin, Chloroquine, CellCept, Becaplermin specifically for ulceration along with Infliximab. There are now several reports of Infliximab to use for necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum in the literature regarding necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum; however, these are not case controlled studies and therefore it is difficult to comment further than the individual reports which report a rapid response to the treatment. « less

- I have hidradenitis occasionally, but had a very bad one recently. It left me with dark red colored skin in that area. Can I do something to remove this discoloration? Also is hidradenitis contagious to a sex partner?

Hidradenitis is not felt to be a contagious condition; however, similar type lesions can be caused some bacteria that certainly could be contagious. « less

- My son has a cyst on his nose that gets big then goes down but never away. I have taken him to two dermatologist who have said it will always be there and that surgery is not a good idea but I know something has to be done. He has had it for three years and recently it got so big I know it has to hurt his self esteem. Oh one Dr give him a shot of cortisone or something which helped only a little. My son is sixteen and would certainly your help and advice.

- I ( a healthcare worker) recently had a scalp injury. Culture revealed MRSA. Abcess required surgical I&D. My hair at that site fell out as though I was on chemo or radiation.
Any chance of new hair regrowth? Any suggestions (besides a wig!) if not?

- I have been taking Propecia for MPB for almost a year with decent results and no side effects. I have heard that Proscar cut in quarters can sometimes be prescribed as a cost saving alternative. Is this true? Is there any reason why I should be skeptical of using Proscar?

Proscar and Propecia are the exact chemical with two different trade names. The difference is the amount. Propecia is a 1 mg; Proscar is a 5 mg. Therefore, if you can accurately quarter Proscar you are getting the same drug, just 0.25 mg higher concentration. « less
