- hi i have a 1998 Canterbury california Merlot that was given to me by a family friend. now i'm a wine newbe but i've determined by the year of the wine that it might be a good wine but i can't seem to find anything online related to the bottle. what's a "newbe" wine that i can start myself with?

If it is red wine you desire then a "Merlot" would be an appropriate "newbie" wine as it is generally soft and fruity. Also I would recommend a Shiraz from Australia especially from the 2005 vintage as the vintage was excellent and there are plenty of affordable wines packed with fruit. As for white wine I would start with a Reisling or Chenin Blanc as they are both relatively mild and fruity. Most of all do not be afraid to explore and listen to what your retailer says is popular. - While on vacation in Isle of Palms, I bought a bottle of Pink Truck Wine simply because I loved the name and the label. I contacted the company and was told that it was scheduled for a "greater" distribution in January 2007. At that time, I was unable to find it in Knoxville. Do you know if it's available in Knoxville now? If so, where can I get it? I have found Red Truck and White Truck, but I haven't found the Pink Truck yet. I live about an hour away from Knoxville and haven't been down in a while. I'll make the trip if you can tell me where to find Pink Truck Wine. Thanks!

I have talked to our local wholesaler and they have it on order. It should be here soon. Give me a call in a couple of weeks and I'll let you know the latest. My number is 584-3341. Rose and Pink wines are one of the fastest growing categories in the wine industry. Three or four years ago, it was hard to find two or three really good, drier-styled roses. Today, there are several in the market. Typically April and May is the time of year that they are released. I look forward to trying Pink Truck! « less

The key question is how has the wine been stored all of these years? If cellared properly, it could be worth anywhere from $125 to $200. If not cellar properly, then it's more of a pot luck situation. « less

It is a non-vintage blend that includes Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and a little bit of Cabernet Sauvignon. About each six months it comes out with a new Lot#, and the current one is Lot #42. It retails around $12 and it provides tons of soft, easy-going fruit. It is versatile with a number of different foods. Another thought would be to try a Beaujolais. Producers include Georges Duboeuf, Joseph Drouhin and Louis Jadot. They are a little bit lighter and are also fruity. Great for Spring and Summer drinking. Stop by the store and our staff will be glad to show you some other options. « less

But for best results for cellaring a bottle of wine, the best temperature range is usually 55-60 degrees. This allows the wine to slowly age and mature. Refrigerators normally are set around 40 degrees or less, which basically shuts down the aging cycle and can begin to effect the flavor profile. In the future, the best advice is to cellar the wine in a cool, dark place with temperature ranges of 55-60 degrees until your special occasion arrives. Then, take the bottle and chill it properly. This way, if you decide to not use that particular bottle for that special occasion, it will still be ready for the next occasion. « less
