They make a great gift for a wedding, holidays or other special occasions. The biggest question I must ask you is how has the champagne been stored? If stored in a "cellar-like" enviroment (meaning a cool, dark place with temperatures around a constant 60 degrees or so), then yes, I would say that the champagne would be very nice. But, if stored at room temperature, the life cycle speeds up considerably. So, if stored properly, then there could be some extra value to the gift set. If not stored properly, probably not. But, if you keep it, give it a try soon. It may turn out to spectactular! « less

- I have a bottle of 1998 Dom Perignon. I put it in the regular fridge about 4 weeks ago (thinking we would have it that night, but didn't.) How long is too long to refrigerate the bottle before you drink it? We like it really cold, so it has been about 40 degrees.

If it had been in the frig for 40 weeks, you might have a problem. But, four weeks is not long enough to create serious issues. If you want to save it for a special occasion down the line, then take it out and keep it on its side in a cool, dark place. If you want to enjoy it soon, leave it in the frig. It's a great bottle of champagne! « less

An alternative to Grenacha if it is not available would be a spicy pinot noir or a lighter syrah. It is not important to spend much money on this bottle of wine because you are going to add more flavors to it. As for a favorite sangria recipe the basic ingredients consist of a slash of brandy, a splash of orange liquor, lime juice, and cut up fruit (such as lemons, limes, oranges, apples, grapes). I would mix these in a chilled pitcher and pour over ice. You will need to experiment with different mixing ratios to find what pleases you (more lime juice for a tart flavor, more orange liquor for a sweet flavor, etc.). Good luck & have fun! Sangria is a wonderful summer drink! « less

- Hi Thad, I've recently come into some what I think are old bottles of champange. The people that owned them were in their 80's and had them in the china cabinet in their dinning room, standing upright. How can you tell for sure when they were bottled? the numbers on some of the bottle bottoms range from 76 to 90 One is a gift box of Paul Massondry champagne with two blown flutes. I think it is from 1976. Might they be woth something or should I just trash the bunch. Any help is appreciated. Mary

My guess is that since the bottles have been stored inproperly for such a long period of time, the wine is probably way past its peak. BUT, just for the fun, you might go ahead and put them in the frig for a day or two and open them and see what happens. The bubbles are properly gone. If you want to be adventurous, open them. Otherwise, go ahead and toss them. « less
