05-04-2007 - Ginny - Because of the smokiness of the ham (and sometimes bacon if it is included), my first thought is to serve a nice dry Rose, like the 2005 Protocolo Rose from Spain ($7.49 a bottle!) If you would like to serve a red, try a fruit-forward Syrah or Shiraz. A good value Shiraz is the 2005 Milton Park Shiraz ($9.99). If this is the first course of the meal, I would stick with a Rose. Let me know how it works out.

I'm simply trying to assertain, what the current market value is for my 1988 Cuvee Dom Perignon Rose, and what do you think a fair asking price would be in the event I decided to sell it. Also, do...

9-19-2007 - Chris, 1988 was an excellent vintage for champagne, and for a rare wine like Dom Perignon Rose, the value can be very high. But, I must caution you that the key element in determining the value of your wine is the past history of its "life". Where has it been stored all of these years, and has it been stored properly? If you are the original owner, then you have a better chance of getting top dollar if the wine has been properly stored. That value could reach as high as $400-$500. But, most collectors are very cautious of buying wine without knowing the buyer personally or the company's reputation as a seller. As for finding a buyer, I would look to the internet. But, be aware of Tennessee state law before proceeding to make sure that you are not breaking one of the many crazy alcoholic beverage laws that are on the books.

06-19-2007 - Robert, I think that you are going to love Knoxville. Here is a list of the six local distributors in the Knoxville area. Tennessee state law requires that all Knoxville package stores and restaurants buy from these six distributors only. All are locally owned. B&T Distributing: 865-602-2233 Beverage Control, Inc. - 865-577-5543 D&V Distributing: 865-584-0181 Dinwiddie Distributing: 865-694-0079 Knoxville Beverage: 865-637-9411 Triple "C" Distributing: 865-690-6252

I have a bottle of Dom Perignon, dated 1989. Is it too old to drink? I, obviously, know nothing about alcohol, but this was a gift and we just never used it. Is it still good? Thanks, Sandy

10-01-2007 - Sandy - Dom Perignon is the flagship cuvee for Moet & Chandon, and it can be cellared for several years. If it has been stored properly, then you are in for a treat! If it has been exposed to heat or direct sunlight for a long period of time, then you might have issues. But, give it a try. I believe you will enjoy it very much. Get an ice bucket and put the bottle in and pour in a mixture of ice and cold water. Let the bottle bathe until it is quite cold. Now, you are ready!

06-21-2007 - Tammy, no worries. If it had been in the frig for 40 weeks, you might have a problem. But, four weeks is not long enough to create serious issues. If you want to save it for a special occasion down the line, then take it out and keep it on its side in a cool, dark place. If you want to enjoy it soon, leave it in the frig. It's a great bottle of champagne!

Hi Thad, I want to serve some Sangria at a small gathering, could you recommend a nice wine to use and possibly your favorite sangria recipe if you have one? Thanks, Dave

Thad

06-28-2007 - Dave-I assume you are making the more popular "red" Sangria so I would recommend a light & fruity red wine such as a Spanish Grenacha. An alternative to Grenacha if it is not available would be a spicy pinot noir or a lighter syrah. It is not important to spend much money on this bottle of wine because you are going to add more flavors to it. As for a favorite sangria recipe the basic ingredients consist of a slash of brandy, a splash of orange liquor, lime juice, and cut up fruit (such as lemons, limes, oranges, apples, grapes). I would mix these in a chilled pitcher and pour over ice. You will need to experiment with different mixing ratios to find what pleases you (more lime juice for a tart flavor, more orange liquor for a sweet flavor, etc.). Good luck & have fun! Sangria is a wonderful summer drink!

10-02-2007 - Sylvia - yes, it's worth something. The fact that you have kept it in a cool, dark place is great. It should be just fine. The value is anywhere from $250 - $400. It should be drinking great. If it was me, I'd be looking for a reason to open it!
