It sounds like you are getting a traumatically induced bunion. Conservative treatment is orthotics, splints, pads, wide shoes, etc. These can be corrected when they hurt. Let the pain be the determining factor to when you have the surgery. A podiatrist will likely have more experience treating these than an orthopedist.

Arch reconstruction is an extensive surgery with long recovery. The best person in Knoxville for that is Dr. Cliff Gilley. Alternative to reconstruction would be bracing, orthotics, appropriate shoes, etc. I'm happy to see you at one of my locations.

Your curling toes are most likely a result of changing your gait to better stabilize your sore ankle. However, they could be caused by other things. It isn't uncommon for sprains to have an extensive recovery complicated by pain and swelling. Xrays are usually enough to evaluate most sprained ankles but if you are still not improving after this long you may need an MRI.

Muriel, what you are describing sounds like muscle cramping/spasms. These are usually because of: overuse, using muscles in ways you normally don't, dietary deficiency, use of "water pills". Relief can come from changes in diet and activities, medications and you might even try 8 oz of tonic water with quinine as soon as they start. You can find this in the grocery store with all the sodas.

Dr. C

No. Lichen planus is a disease in which there is an itchy rash on the skin or in the mouth. The exact cause of lichen planus is unknown. However, it is likely to be related to an allergic or immune reaction. Risks include: Exposure to medications, dyes, and other chemical substances (including gold, antibiotics, arsenic, iodides, chloroquine, quinacrine, quinide, phenothiazines, and diuretics). Disorders such as Hepatitis can also lead to this. I hope this helps.

We have lots of effective treatments for toenail fungus. Go see your local podiatrist for help.
